서명된 메시지를 보내기 위해 메시지 작성자의 컴퓨터는 해당 메시지에 대한 다이제스트를 생성하고 다이제스트와 작성자의 개인 키로 전자 서명을 계산하여, 메시지와 전자 서명을 모두 보낸다. 수신인은 작성자의 공개키를 사용하여 수신된 메시지에 대한 다이제스트를 생성하고, 수신된 전자 서명을 사용하여 작성자를 확인한다.
