경기 침체(영어: recession)는 생산, 고용, 실질소득, 소비, 투자 등 경제활동이 경제 전반에 걸쳐 상당한 폭으로 감소하는 경기순환상의 수축 국면이다.[1][2]
경기 침체는 경제가 정점에 도달한 뒤 활동 수준이 하락하는 국면을 뜻한다.[1][2] 국제통화기금은 경기 침체를 경제 전반에 걸쳐 나타나며 몇 달 이상 지속되는 경제활동의 유의미한 감소로 설명하고, 미국의 경기판정 기준을 제시하는 미국 경제연구국도 비슷하게 생산, 고용, 실질소득 등 여러 지표에서 확인되는 광범위한 하락을 강조한다.[1][3]
실무적으로는 흔히 실질 국내총생산이 2분기 연속 감소하면 경기 침체라고 부르기도 하지만, 국제통화기금은 이것이 편의적 기준일 뿐 공식적이거나 보편적인 정의는 아니라고 설명한다.[1] 미국 경제연구국은 경기 침체 판정에서 단순히 국내총생산만이 아니라 깊이, 확산 정도, 지속기간을 함께 본다고 밝히고 있다.[2][3]
